Happy Holidays!!

Dear Families,

Happy Birthday to Aattoja on December 30, Reid on January 1, and Kedaar on January 4!

Christmas always reminds me of special times with loved ones.  It is a time when we can enjoy our family and friends.  I am definitely taking time to count all of my blessings during the holiday season.

Thank you to all who volunteered to help with our wonderful winter party! I so appreciate you, Veena Hosur and Jeanette Dunbar, and our 3rd grade room moms, for making sure our party was filled with tons of fun.  It was a great way to begin the holidays!

I am also very grateful for the thoughtful cards, yummy sweets, awesome gifts, hugs from my sweet students, and the generous gift card from my class, but even more, I am thankful that I have your child in my class. It has been an amazing year so far, and I look forward to continue to learn and grow together in the New Year.  Happy Holidays!!

See you all next year,
Mrs. McDonald

We had a magical time at the Austin Nutcracker Ballet at the Long Center. It is by far one of my favorite ballets. It definitely puts me in the holiday spirit, and our third graders were amazing.

Also, thank you PTA for providing the yummy cookies for the annual staff cookie swap! It is such a treat and my family and I truly appreciate them!

It is hard believe it is the last week of school before winter break! This fall semester has really flown by. I am so proud of the hard work all of my students have done so far, and very excited to see how much more they will accomplish when we start the new year and spring semester. December 'Round the World!

Dear Parents,

Congratulations to Benny for being our marvelous MVP last week. We enjoyed to learning more about our special friend when he shared his banner with us.

Also, congratulations to Luke, Sam, and Varun for being three of the winners to have lunch with author, Nathan Hale! Way to Go!

What another wonderful week in Third Grade! Participating in the Hour of Code, programing Spheros, and listening to holiday music from the Grisham Band, Orchestra, and Choir were some of the highlights! These days seem to just be flying by, and our winter break is approaching soon.

I am super excited for you all to join us for the December ‘Round the World performance on Wednesday, December 12th at 8:00 a.m. This magical musical definitely puts me in the holiday spirits. I am so proud of our 3rd graders, and a HUGE thank you to Mrs. Martin!

DECEMBER AROUND THE WORLD
Please continue to work on speaking parts!  Many students have them memorized, but need to speak with enthusiasm!

Performances are at 8:00 a.m. on 12/11 & 12/12.  Please have students come either in costume (American, Hanukkah, Diwali, Chinese and German scenes) or prepared to get into costumes here (African, Spanish, and those borrowing costumes)

Hair needs to be fixed/combed. Students will need a change of clothes. The plan is to hang up costumes and send them home that afternoon for the performance on Wednesday morning and apply the same procedure.  If you have any questions please let me know! I appreciate your help!

FIELD TRIP
Third grade students are going on a field trip to see The Nutcracker at the Long Center this Thursday, December 13th. We plan to leave around 11:00 and returning after our lunch period. We will be eating at approximately 10:30 in our classrooms, so students should bring a lunch from home and a small snack for our return.  Third graders will dress up for our ballet experience, so we will not be wearing CCE t-shirts. I just LOVE The Nutcracker!

HOUR OF CODE
We were very excited with programing last week. Our technology support, Ms. Owen, walked us through the “hour of code” available through our website on the Student Links page and introduced us to coding a Sphero (which will be apart of the 3rd Grade STEAM project). This was impressive and just might light the spark for future careers. Ask your children about it!

RECESS
During these winter months we just wanted to remind families that we do go out to recess each day as long as it's not raining.  Some days may be chilly so please dress your child appropriately and send them with things that will keep them warm at recess on these cold days.

Mark your calendars for our annual CCE Fall Scholastic Book Fair the week of November 12-16th. What a great opportunity to purchase books for your child!

THIRD GRADE FIELD TRIP TO THE PAC
Third graders will enjoy a performance of “The Coloring Book” by the Westwood High School Theater Department on November 13th.  Permission slips will be going home in your child’s Tuesday folder this week. We will be eating lunch when we arrive back to school, but just in case we are late for our regularly scheduled lunch, it is a good idea for your child to bring a sack lunch from home that we can eat in the classroom.

THANKSGIVING FEAST
Our Annual Thanksgiving Day Feast is Wednesday, November 14th during your child’s regular lunch time (12:12-12:42). We love to have family members join us!

PICTURE RETAKES
For those who ordered a school picture package, if you are not satisfied with your child's pictures, return the entire packet to school and we will hold onto them until re-takes on November 29th.

RECESS
Please make sure your child is dressed for the cold/damp weather. We try to make it outside unless it is raining or there are freezing temperatures.

HOMEWORK
Planners are completed daily.  Please check and initial your child’s planner nightly.

Students are required to read for a minimum of 20 minutes per night and record a quick response on their reading logs. Signed logs are DUE every Wednesday. Book Bucks are earned with every 100 minutes read. Students can “purchase” books from our “Book Buck Libraries” with 10 book bucks.

Nightly reading is crucial to your child's overall reading success. Reading should be an interactive process, so please remember to initial or sign your child's log before turning it in on Wednesday.

Students should practice math skills 10 minutes nightly.  This could be anything from Education Galaxy, to flashcards or even a series of problems written by a parent.

Two Day Holiday for Students!

Dear Parents,

Congratulations to Reid for being our MVP this week! We enjoyed learning more about our special classmate when he shared his banner with us on Monday.

Reading buddies started on Friday, and we are so excited to have a new Kindergarten friend to read with each week. Ask your child about his/her new Kindergarten reading buddy!

Parent/Teacher conferences will continue this Monday. Please click on Sign up Genius to confirm your time. Conferences are such a wonderful opportunity to visit with parents. I have already had many meaningful conversations and have learned so much more about my students. I love knowing that we are working together to help your child reach their full potential. I appreciate you taking the time for this meeting. If we haven’t already met, I look forward to meeting with you in the coming days.

We know there is A LOT going on at school so thanks to all those parents who have already turned in your forms/donations to our Room Parents for the 3rd grade class activities. Forms are due on October 24th.  If your form has been misplaced please feel free to email me. We are really looking forward to a fun year together. Thank you!

I am delighted to partner with you in your child's education.  Communication is our greatest tool to ensure your child's success. Please do not hesitate to contact me at any time!

Enjoy your extended weekend,
