Happy MLK Day!

Dear Parents,

STEAM Night is on Thursday, January 24th from 6:00-7:00 pm and we would love for you to join us! This is an opportunity for students to share their learning with you and to experience learning from other grade levels. Due to the nature of the event and the importance of keeping all students safe, please remain with your children at all times. Look forward to seeing you all there.

In preparation for Valentine's Day, your 3rd grader will need to decorate a box/bag for their Valentine mail. Also, a pink paper will soon be coming home in your child's Tuesday Folder with a class list and instructions for bringing in a decorated Valentine box/bag and Valentine’s for classmates

Thank you in advance to our homeroom parents for organizing our Valentine’s Day class party and to all parents helping at the event. The festivities will be so much fun, and will include the ultimate thrill….checking out the treasures that await in their Valentine’s Day boxes. I love watching the excitement that builds as the children tear open their envelopes!

Monday, January 21st is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a school holiday. I hope you all enjoy the extra family time.

Stay warm,
Mrs. McDonald

SPHERO BATTLEBOTS
Last week, our third graders designed battlebots with their Spheros robots. After creating their armor, the students put their battlebots to the test by trying to pop their opponent’s balloons. They had so much fun that they will be sharing their battlebots at STEAM Night this Thursday. Be sure to stop by and battle a bot. It’s a BLAST!

PICTURE DAY
We will take Class Pictures and Spring Individual Portraits on January 31st! Please send your child to school with his/her class picture money on that day. The individual portrait proofs will be sent home in the following weeks, then families may decide on the package to purchase.

PARENT CLIMATE SURVEY
Please take a few moments to participate in the 2018 Parent Climate Survey today.  Each day staff, students and volunteers at Canyon Creek Elementary work hard to ensure academic programs and the campus environment meet the needs of all children. The survey will only be open until February 9th.  Thank you for your participation. You are a critical part of our success!

PRINCIPAL’S COFFEE CHAT
Please join us for the next PRINCIPAL'S COFFEE CHAT on Wednesday, February 13th at 7:45 am.  We will be discussing strategies for stress with Mrs. Hougham, as well as making some takeaways!

HOMEWORK:
Planners are completed daily.  Please check and initial your child’s planner nightly.

Students are required to read for a minimum of 20 minutes per night and record a quick response on their reading logs. Signed logs are DUE every Wednesday. Book Bucks are earned with every 100 minutes read. Students can “purchase” books from our “Book Buck Libraries” with 10 book bucks.

Nightly reading is crucial to your child's overall reading success. Reading should be an interactive process, so please remember to initial or sign your child's log before turning it in on Wednesday.

Students should practice math skills 10 minutes nightly.  This could be anything from Education Galaxy, to flashcards or even a series of problems written by a parent.

Each FRIDAY students will receive spelling lists and work. Practice spelling the words correctly and complete the homework packet due each THURSDAY. Spelling Tests will be administered on Fridays.
