Mrs. McDonald's 3rd Grade Class

Sunday, February 24, 2019

Dear Parents,

Thank you to Student Council for organizing “Twin Day”.  It was fun seeing friends dress like each other. Pictures of “Twin Day” are located on the CCE Newsletter.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, our third grade students will take the STAAR Ready test.  This STAAR practice test will identify the areas of strength and improvement for each student. Please make certain your child is prepared by following routines, getting a good night’s rest and eating a healthy breakfast!  Students will need a snack or two (no greasy, sticky or wet snacks), a sealable water bottle, and a great book to read.

Wednesday, March 13th third grade students will go on an art field trip to the Blanton and Umlauf art galleries. Please turn in your child’s permission slip to school by this Friday. Don't forget to fill out both sides of the form and return it with the $2.00 fee.  We also encourage as many parents to chaperone as possible. Parents, however, must provide their own transportation (carpooling with other parents is a possibility) and a sack lunch.  Also, a small fee may be required at the Blanton.  If you are interested in accompanying us, let me know at your earliest convenience so that I can plan our groups and make preparations for our fun filled field trip. Thank you to those who have already volunteered!

Please continue to encourage your child to complete the Library reading program. Our class goal is to have 100% participation. Forms are due Thursday, February 28th.

Gratefully,
Mrs. McDonald

February Character Trait: OPEN-MINDED

HOMEWORK REMINDERS
It is suggested that your 3rd grader should plan for 35 minutes of “homework” per night:
20 minutes of reading and complete reading response log. Reading Logs are due each Wednesday.
10 minutes of math (Education Galaxy, STAAR practice books, etc)
5 minutes of spelling. Spelling packets are due on Thursday and the test is on Friday.
Additional Make up work from being absent or assignments not completed in class.

Thank you for encouraging your child at home to bring his/her homework folder and planner to and from school everyday.

LIBRARY SPRING READING INCENTIVE
The library Spring Reading Incentive is in full swing! Packets with reading logs have gone home. All reading logs are due February 28 to receive your free theme park tickets. For Six Flags, read 6 hours. For Schlitterbahn, read 10 hours. The same reading can be used for both, but the but the two reading logs need to be filled out individually. You can get another copy of the form HERE or on the LIBRARY WEBSITE. Our class goal is a 100% participation and the kiddos can earn extra book bucks for turning in completed forms. Congratulations to those who have already reached their reading goal!

LIBRARY ACCOUNTS FROM HOME
Did you know that you your student can check their library accounts from home? All you need is their student ID number (without the "s") CLICK HERE or THIS PAGE on the library website to learn how!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR MULTICULTURAL FAIR
The Multicultural Fair is one of the biggest events at CCE! This year it is on Friday, March 8th. We need a lot of volunteers to make the event a success. Please sign up here to volunteer.

If you have a Middle or High Schooler who would like to volunteer at the MCF, they can sign up here. They will receive volunteer hours.

HOMEWORK
Planners are completed daily.  Please check and initial your child’s planner nightly.

Students are required to read for a minimum of 20 minutes per night and record a quick response on their reading logs. Signed logs are DUE every Wednesday. Book Bucks are earned with every 100 minutes read. Students can “purchase” books from our “Book Buck Libraries” with 10 book bucks.

Nightly reading is crucial to your child's overall reading success. Reading should be an interactive process, so please remember to initial or sign your child's log before turning it in on Wednesday.

Students should practice math skills 10 minutes nightly.  This could be anything from Education Galaxy, to flashcards or even a series of problems written by a parent.  This link has some suggestions for free math apps, too. Free Math Apps

Each FRIDAY students will receive spelling lists and work. Practice spelling the words correctly and complete the homework packet due each THURSDAY. Spelling Tests will be administered on Fridays.
